The need for the Word of God is overwhelming…
At that time when Mary Jones set out to buy her own Bible, God’s Word or parts of the Bible had been translated into only 67 languages. Today parts of the Bible have been translated into over 2,474 languages, a mere one third of the 6, 500 spoken in the world.
Our task remains huge because –
-
More than 4,000 languages do not have even one Bible translated into its own language.
-
There are nearly three billion people living on less than $2 a day – making the Bible a luxury they cannot afford.
-
About a billion people who cannot read but only 3% of the languages have the Bible in audio format.
-
In Singapore, survey shows that daily bible reading is on the decline, let alone making the Word of God their point of reference in life. About 65% of the Christians have not read the Bible and only 25% of those who read it do read the Bible daily.
* Statistics are for the year 2008
Our Task:
Bringing the Word to action …
Despite the challenges, the Bible Society of Singapore continues to find new and creative ways in making the Word of God relevant to all peoples. We are also partnering with the churches to help the local Christian community live out God’s story in its daily life.
