FEATURE ARTICLE: CULTIVATING THE FRUIT OF GENEROSITY TO THE DESTITUTE

In today's world, there is often a focus on accumulating wealth and possessions, with the idea that we should give back only when we feel we have enough. However, true fulfilment comes not from what we own but from how we share what we have with others. As the Bible says, “Life does not consist in an abundance of possessions” (Luke 12:15). Generosity is about being openhearted and giving, regardless of our circumstances or how much we possess. It reflects a deeper value of kindness and selflessness that benefits everyone, reminding us that the greatest rewards in life are found in giving, not in keeping.

Various initiatives of *SowCare were made possible through the faithfulness of your generous contributions. These allowed us to extend our hands and hearts to the children from over 40 low-income families as we joined *HIA’s The Alphabet Project (TAP) in distributing rice packs and assorted toys to them at Block 462 Sembawang Drive, followed by arts and crafts, and a simple Zumba dance session for the children. TAP aims to reach out to at least 1,000 underprivileged children each year.

Building on the spirit of generosity, we are deeply thankful for the opportunity to serve and share God's love with the once-rough sleepers at Bible House over the past three years through the Safe Sound Sleeping Places (S3Ps) initiative. Through God's grace and the generosity of donors and partners, we have been able to provide essential needs to those staying with us through monthly warm meals and festive angbaos.

SowCare's partnership with Catholic Welfare Services (CWS) has allowed us to create warm and meaningful gatherings for S3P stayers and other rough sleepers in the city area, offering them a place where they can truly feel at home and belong. Sharing a meal and playing a simple game of Bingo brought everyone together, breaking down barriers and fostering deeper connections and mutual understanding. These moments provided not just comfort, but dignity and hope, reminding everyone involved that they are valued and not alone.

“You guys are like angels...”, shared a resident.

Jesus’ radical generosity and grace have shown us how much we should also be moved with compassion when we look at the destitute around us. May we be filled and transformed by the Holy Spirit, that we can bear the spiritual fruit of generosity in our lives, as it becomes our true nature.

At SowCare, we are committed to cultivating the spirit of generosity by reaching out to vulnerable communities, including underprivileged children and families, the elderly staying in the rental flats, rough sleepers, guest workers, and migrant domestic workers. We invite you to join us in aligning our hearts with God's deep care for those in need.

Galatians and the Gospel of Grace – 23 Apr 2025

Paul addresses Christians in Galatia in Asia Minor, calling them back from false teachings and spiritual decline in departing from the Gospel. He shares his testimony and clarifies their misunderstandings whilst referring back to the Old Covenant, showing how the Law and the Gospel go together. Galatians fits part of the Book of Acts, giving a clue when it may have been written.

Facilitators:

Rev Dr Malcolm TH Tan
Rev Dr Malcolm TH Tan had served as a Methodist Pastor for almost 40 years before retiring in Dec 2023.
