People Care—Helping Children & Youth with Uncontrolled Computer Use
In partnership with the Sower Institute for Biblical Discipleship at The Bible Society of Singapore, Asian Pastoral Institute Care & Counselling (APICC) offering this People Care topic. This topic consists of two workshops that build on each other (Session 1 and Session 2). Participants can register for either session 1 or 2 or both. All workshops are now independent of each other. Upon completion of each session, participants are issued a certificate of participation from APICC.
Session 1
Understanding Problematic Computer Use in Childhood and Youth
Mental health challenges related to excessive computer use are becoming increasingly prevalent among children and young adults. This workshop aims to equip participants with essential skills to identify and address problematic computer use effectively. We will delve into the characteristics of excessive computer use, explore common online platforms and games that children often engage with, and understand the reasons why they may lose control over their screen time. Through interactive case studies, participants will gain valuable insights and practical steps for providing adult supervision and monitoring in this digital age.

Helping Children and Youth Manage Excessive Computer Use
As mental health challenges related to excessive computer use continue to impact children and young adults, this workshop is designed to equip participants with vital skills to effectively address this issue. We will delve into the characteristics of problematic computer use, exploring common online platforms and games children often engage with, while understanding the reasons behind their loss of control over screen time. Through interactive case studies, attendees will gain valuable insights and practical steps for providing adult supervision and monitoring in this digital age.
Learning Objectives:
- Using the principles of an A-B-C analysis to understand excessive computer use
- Building a portfolio of behavioural methods to change patterns of computer use
- Learning child-focused approaches that address poor self-esteem, problem-solving, and unhelpful coping that maintain excessive computer use
- Adopting family-focused strategies that address poor communication and family relationships that maintain excessive computer use
- Participative learning from case studies

Facilitators
Mr Lim Cheng Yong
MPsy (Clinical), MA (Pastoral Studies), BPsy (Hons), BSc, PGDip (Education)
Cheng Yong works as a clinical psychologist with a local hospital after serving as an educator in the local education system for the past 30 years. In his clinical training, he worked with patients with anxiety, depression, and those coping with grief from loss, amongst other mental health conditions. His primary psychotherapy modalities are Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. He is also a graduate of the Asian Pastoral Institute, equipped with both practical and Biblical foundations to provide holistic pastoral care to those he leads in his church house group community.
Dr Matthew Lim
DClinPsy, DPhil (Psychiatry), BSocSc (Hons)
Matthew has worked in inpatient and outpatient psychology services in London and Singapore and has over five years of experience supervising clinical psychology trainees. He serves as a lecturer in clinical psychology at a local university and has successfully published several academic papers in international peer-reviewed journals. He is a registered practitioner psychologist and clinical supervisor with the Singapore Psychological Society.
